UFMI Stands With Veteran Filmmaker Namwanje Sophie

Uganda’s Film Fraternity Unites to Support Veteran Producer Namwanje Sophie.

Uganda’s film community came together at the National Theatre in Kampala in a show of solidarity and support for veteran producer, director and actor Namwanje Sophie, who was facing serious health challenges. The fundraising gathering brought together filmmakers, production companies, creative professionals and other stakeholders from across Uganda’s film industry. The initiative was spearheaded by Pearlwood, where Namwanje Sophie is a registered producer, with support from organisations and individuals within the creative sector.

The Uganda National Cultural Centre waived the venue fees for the event, allowing all proceeds raised to go directly towards supporting the filmmaker. Among the organisations and stakeholders that participated were Cinema UG, Film and Culture Market, the Uganda Federation of Movie Industry, Boss Pictures, Zubaili Family, independent filmmakers and several production houses. UFMI contributed UGX 1,000,000 towards the fundraising effort, reaffirming the importance of solidarity within Uganda’s film community and the need for industry stakeholders to support one another during difficult times.

The gathering also highlighted broader conversations about the welfare and protection of creative professionals. Industry leaders called for stronger and more permanent support structures that can assist filmmakers and other creatives when they face emergencies and difficult circumstances.

UFMI Board of Governors Chairperson Ragga Dee emphasised the importance of unity within the film industry and encouraged stakeholders to strengthen their support for one another. He also raised the idea of establishing a dedicated benevolent fund that could provide assistance to filmmakers during times of need.

The event demonstrated the strength of collaboration within Uganda’s creative community. Beyond the immediate fundraising effort, it highlighted the importance of building an industry where filmmakers can access support, professional networks and structures that recognise both their creative contribution and their welfare.

For UFMI, supporting the film community extends beyond promoting the growth of films and filmmakers. It also means standing with industry professionals during challenging moments and encouraging stronger systems that can contribute to a more organised, resilient and sustainable Ugandan film industry.

The funds raised through the event were intended to contribute towards Namwanje Sophie’s medical care.
